Orlando Magic Hire Rob Hennigan as GM

Dwight Howard

In a move that may impact the Nets’ chances of acquiring Dwight Howard, the Orlando Magic have hired a new general manager in Rob Hennigan. Hennigan will be the youngest GM in basketball at only 30 years old and he has formerly worked for the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

I am glad that the Magic have made this decision prior to the 2012 NBA draft so that the Nets will have a chance at pulling off a draft day trade to acquire Howard, and they would not have been able to do this if the Magic had not yet hired a GM. Adrian Wojnarowski has written that Howard wants a trade now and that this is the first step to him finding a new home, likely in Brooklyn. Also, despite popular belief, Chris Broussard believes that Howard’s decision will not effect Deron Williams’s decision about where he will sign this offseason. Reports say that the Nets and Mavericks are still in the lead for Deron.

I still can’t see what the Nets would trade away to get Howard this offseason.  They can’t trade any newly signed free agents until the season begins.
