Deron Williams led the way for Team USA in a starting role Thursday, as they cruised to a 118-78 victory over Great Britain in Manchester, England. This was Williams’ first start with the US national team, and he sure did take advantage of it. In less than 20 minutes of playing time, Williams scored 19 points on only 8 shots. He was 7-8 from the field and 5-6 from 3. He also added 5 assists and 2 steals. Team USA is now 3-0 in Olympic preview games. Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls had 25 points for England.
One interesting note in this game is that Deron replaced Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony in the starting lineup. Carmelo also finished with 19 points. Coach K may be trying to spark a rivalry between the two players to get them to play even harder than they normally would. I hope Deron stays in the starting lineup when the Olympics actually start, but I would not be surprised to see him replaced. The next game for the US is on Sunday against Manu Ginobili and Argentina.
