Shaq: Knicks Still More Prominent Than Nets

Charles Barkley has already weighed in on the Nets offseason and compared it to the Knicks’ offseason. Now, the other NBA on TNT analyst, Shaquille O’Neal, offered some opinions while at a Yankees game. When asked if the Nets will ever reign supreme over the Knicks in New York, O’Neal responded, “No, probably not.” However he added, “I’m looking for the Nets-Knicks rivalry to amp up a little bit more this year…The good thing about (New Yorkers) is that they’re always excited, they’re very competitive.”

While I do not know what the future holds for the Nets, I tend to agree with Shaq. Growing up in Manhattan and being friends with Knicks fans my whole life, I know how passionate and loyal Knicks fans can be. I also know that New York fans like competition. I predict that there will be a real, intense rivalry between the Knicks and Nets in the coming years – but that the Knicks will be more popular. Still, the Nets could certainly outperform the Knicks this season and be the only New York team in some NBA playoffs round. If that happened, the Nets should definitely draw a ton of support.

The only way the Nets will ever have more fans than the Knicks is if they win a whole lot of games for many years.
