The Brooklyn Nets cut forwards James Mays and Carleton Scott from their roster today. This comes a few days after also cutting guard Stephen Dennis, which means that their opening night 15-man roster is set. All three of these players were training camp invites who were not expected to make the team. Both Mays and Scott will likely go the Nets’ D-League affiliate, the Springfield Armor, unless they decide to go play in Europe. The Nets do not have the rights to Dennis unless he were to make the final roster.
Beating out this trio of rookies were two veterans, Andray Blatche and Josh Childress. Blatche has looked like a solid rotation player for the Nets in the preseason, while I would assume that Childress barely made the roster. If there was one player who I thought may not make the team, it was Childress, but the Nets are keeping him around for his veteran leadership and experience.
Now that the Nets know exactly who will be taking the floor on opening night, I will attempt to guess the first, second, and third teams that Avery Johnson will put out based on their preseason performance.
First Team:
PG: Deron Williams
SG: Joe Johnson
SF: Gerald Wallace
PF: Kris Humphries
C: Brook Lopez
Second Team:
PG: C.J. Watson
SG: Marshon Brooks
SF: Keith Bogans
PF: Reggie Evans
C: Andray Blatche
Third Team:
PG: Tyshawn Taylor
SG: Jerry Stackhouse
SF: Josh Childress
PF: Tornike Shengelia
C: Mirza Teletovic
Of course, these teams will change once the season begins, players exceed or don’t meet expectations, and when injuries occur. The Nets open the season next Thursday against the New York Knicks.
