Kentucky Defeats Maryland In First College Game at Barclays Center

Nerlens Noel

In the first college basketball game at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the third ranked University of Kentucky defeated the unranked University of Maryland, 72-69 in front of a sold out crowd. The Wildcats were led by Sophomore Kyle Wiltjer’s 19 points and the Terrapins were led by sophomore Alex Len’s 23 points and 12 rebounds. Super freshman Nerlens Noel only scored 4 points to go along with 9 rebounds in his first college game. Many people think he will be the first pick in next year’s NBA draft. Kentucky was ahead by 13 at halftime, but Maryland used a second half rally to take the lead. Kentucky’s late free throws prevented Maryland from an upset victory.

There will be a handful of games at Barclays Center this season, and more in the coming years. The Atlantic 10 conference tournament will also be held here at the end of the season. In the future, Barclays Center could host NCAA tournament games. The Prudential Center in Newark and the Izod Center in East Rutherford hosted NCAA games while the Nets played at those buildings.
