Deron Williams has led the Brooklyn Nets to an 11-5 start this season, their best start in franchise history. The team has already had two 5-game winning streaks and, despite losing to Miami twice on the road, they have had some good wins against Boston twice, the Clippers, and the Knicks.
However, D-Will hasn’t been a huge part of their start, at least in the scoring department. Deron has only averaged 15.4 ppg through the first 16 games of the season and hasn’t scored 20 or more in his last 7 games. He is shooting career low percentages: 38% from the field and 27% from 3.
Additionally, Deron has been banged up a lot in the beginning of the season. He has had many small injuries already including elbow, ankle, and wrist injuries. He will probably need to get wrist surgery in the offseason, but is avoiding it for now.
But Deron doesn’t think that his injuries are slowing him down. His confidence is what is holding him back from scoring more. According to Howard Beck, Deron had this to say:
“It’s not my wrist, man, it’s my confidence. I just got to play better. Injuries or not, I got to play. I can’t keep having 10 points, not being aggressive. I just got to find a rhythm. It’s just tough…I definitely need to play better for us to make that jump. We can be a great team. You’ve seen us — we won five straight, and I haven’t shot the ball well. And we’ve had some good wins…I feel like I’m letting my team down. I feel like I’m not doing enough to help us win.”
As a Nets fan, this is great to hear. If Deron gets injured, the Nets will be in trouble, and it is good that Deron is not using his small injuries as excuses. If he is in a slump without being injured, that is fine. Eventually he will come out of his slump and start shooting the ball well again like he has done his whole career.
Also, this is a great problem for the Nets to have. Deron Williams is a superstar in this league, and if he isn’t playing his best and the Nets are still winning, great. It would be much worse if the bench was playing poorly or if Brook Lopez did not live up to his big contract, because those things may not be reversible.
Even though Deron is shooting poorly, his passing has been great this season and the Nets’ offense has had great ball movement for the most part (with the exception of the second half of Saturday’s game vs. Miami). Once Deron finds his shooting stroke, this team could be scary good.
