With the NBA Finals now over, the basketball world is already looking to the Finals next season. The odds for winning next year’s championship have already been released, with, no surprise, the Miami Heat being the favorites. You can view the full list here.
The Brooklyn Nets are only listed as 40-1 odds to win the championship, tied with the Dallas Mavericks for 14th highest odds. The Mavs didn’t even make the playoffs this year.
Some of the especially puzzling teams ahead of the Nets currently are the Boston Celtics (33-1), Los Angeles Lakers (22-1), Houston Rockets (20-1), and Manhattan Knicks (18-1).
The Nets were disrespected all last season and responded by finishing with the fourth best record in the east, even though they lost in the first round of the playoffs. This is yet another situation where people are showing the team no respect by putting them in the very middle of the pack of championship contending teams.
I am not saying that I think the Nets will win the championship next year, but they’ve now been with each other for a full, 82-game season, they have strong ownership that is willing to spend money to put the best possible roster on the court, and the team has expressed that their goal next year is a championship.
For some other teams ahead of Brooklyn like the Celtics, Rockets, Nuggets, and others, I’m not sure that is the case.
Of course, the odds will continue to change as next season draws closer and I expect the Nets to be a little bit higher on that list come November.
