Just one day before the 2013 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets are still hosting workouts and assessing talent. Tomorrow, the Nets will host Jio Fonton (PG, USC), Durand Scott (PG, Miami), Deshaun Thomas (SF, Ohio St.), Demetrius Conger (SF, St. Bonaventure) and AJ Matthews (C, Farmingdale St.), and their most interesting prospect, Gorgui Dieng (PF, Louisville) at their practice facility in New Jersey.
The Nets have been keeping their eye on Dieng since the beginning of this process, but this will be the first time that new coach Jason Kidd will see him live. Reports say that Kidd has not been impressed with what he’s seen so far. Hopefully Dieng or one of these other players will catch his eye.
In the latest mock drafts, there is no consensus on who the Nets will select. Chad Ford has the Nets picking Kelly Olynyk out of Gonzaga, but he also says that Olynyk may be taken late in the lottery.
Meanwhile, In that Ford mock, Dieng has fallen all the way down to the late 20’s.
The Nets still have a lot of options available. They have $3 million of Prokhorov’s money that they are allowed to spend, and that could go a long way in this weaker draft.
They could use that money to buy multiple second round picks as they did last season to stash players in Europe. Or they could use the money to trade up in the draft to get perhaps Dallas’s #13 pick or Minnesota’s #9 in an HBAP trade.
Even though the draft is now less than 2 days away, we still know very little about what the Nets are thinking.
