With most teams focusing on the draft in 2 days, the NBA announced today its international calendar for the upcoming season, with the Brooklyn Nets included. The Nets will be playing one game on January 16, 2014 against the Atlanta Hawks at London’s O2 Arena. This will be the third time that the Nets visit England. They played two games against the Toronto Raptors in 2011.
The O2 Arena will always be a special place for Deron Williams. His first two games as a Net were there. Then, last summer he won a gold medal for Team USA in London. He is happy to be going back.
In addition to the London game, the NBA has decided to expand its regular season international games to Mexico City next season. The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves will be playing at Mexico City Arena on December 4th.
As in the past, there will also be many preseason games in Asia, South America, and Europe, although the Nets will not be participating in any of those games.
This is all a part of the NBA trying to make basketball a more international sport. Will there ever be a team outside of North America? Maybe one day, and that time might be soon.
