It is actually happening!!! The Brooklyn Nets will soon acquire Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Boston Celtics, according to Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In the trade, the Nets will send Gerald Wallace, Toko Shengelia, Kris Humphries, and 3 first round picks to Boston and will get back Garnett, Pierce, and Jason Terry in return. Additionally, the Nets will send Reggie Evans and Keith Bogans to Boston. Bogans will be part of a sign-and-trade.
The trade cannot be made official by the league until July 10th, which is still nearly 2 weeks away.
The biggest issue here for the Nets is their payroll, which will be close to $100 million next season, one of the largest in NBA history. To make things worse, they will need to pay $80 million in luxury taxes, an enormous sum.
The Celtics wanted to make this deal to get rid of some of their large contracts, but will still need to take back Gerald Wallace’s bad 3-year deal.
Despite all the salary issues, this is an excellent trade for the Nets. It puts them very close to Miami in the east and they should be the Heat’s biggest competition next season.
Last year, Brooklyn just wanted to be in the playoffs. This year, they will be contending for a championship. Get excited, Nets fans.
