Nets Running Out of Excuses After Loss to Timberwolves

Reggie Evans and Nikola Pekovic

This is getting very old. The Brooklyn Nets got blown out again Friday night, this time in Minnesota against the Timberwolves, 111-81. The Nets were never even close to being in this game from the first quarter on and trailed by as many as almost 40 points. Andray Blatche scored 16 points off the bench for the Nets. Every Timberwolves starter scored in double figures, led by 17 points and 16 rebounds for Kevin Love in only 28 minutes.

The concerning thing about this game for the Nets is that the Timberwolves didn’t even play well, especially in the first half. Minnesota missed a lot of makable shots and really should have been winning by more at halftime. And they led by 20 points at halftime. The third quarter was probably Minnesota’s best, and when they were playing well, they were able to go on effortless 14-0 runs.

I can give you all the stats, if you want them. The most important one is probably the assist to turnover ratio for the Nets. They had 7 assists and 20 turnovers. The Timberwolves had 28 assists and 8 turnovers. Wow. That’s pretty much all you need to know about how this game went.

Player grades and notes:

Reggie Evans: F

Reggie had a horrible first quarter to prevent the Nets from ever being in this game. He couldn’t rebound or defend against Nikola Pekovic and had multiple 3-second violations on offense. He really killed the Nets in all these ways.

Kevin Garnett: F

Somehow shot above 50% in the game and had 8 points and 8 rebounds. But his defense was beyond awful on Kevin Love, who he couldn’t keep off the glass either, and got called for a technical that sparked a Minnesota run in the fourth quarter. If this is KG’s last time ever playing in Minnesota, at least he gave the fans a good memory or a Timberwolves win.

Paul Pierce: F

Another horrible game for Paul Pierce. He shot 2-11 from the field with only 1 assist. He looked disinterested throughout the game. He looks just about ready to give up.

Joe Johnson: D+

Joe was the only starter who had anything resembling a respectable game. He finished with 15 points on 6-10 shooting. Most of his points came in iso-Joe situations where the Nets weren’t getting anything else on offense.

Shaun Livingston: F

Livingston’s been great so far this season, but this game was very bad. Didn’t make a shot at 0-7 and finished with 1 point on a foul shot. Also didn’t even have an assist in the game. He didn’t take advantage of some of his matchups, like the 9-inch height advantage he had over JJ Barea.

Andray Blatche: D+

Second straight respectable game for Blatche off the bench. He finished with 16 points and shot 7-14 from the field. Most of his points came because nobody else on the Nets was doing anything at all on offense. Still didn’t play any defense and only finished with 4 rebounds.

The Nets will try to somehow get out of this slump on Sunday when they host the also struggling Detroit Pistons at Barclays Center. FRWD will have full coverage of the game.
