The Brooklyn Nets lost yet again Sunday afternoon to another bad team, the Detroit Pistons at home, 109-97. The Nets were actually playing well in the first half today, but after another disastrous third quarter, where they got outscored by 19, this game was just about over. Joe Johnson had a great game for the Nets with 34 points and a career high eight 3′s. Rodney Stuckey had a killer 27 points off the bench for the Pistons. He really hurt the Nets whenever they tried to make a run in the second half.
Well, I guess a positive is that the Nets were competitive for a half today. But the second half was just horrible. Against a team that can’t shoot at all, the Nets allowed 65 second half points and only forced 9 turnovers while the Nets turned the ball over 17 times themselves. They were also outrebounded 44-35 in the game.
This is not even close to a playoff team right now, not even in the horrible eastern conference. There are really no signs the Nets are on track to turn this around.
Player grades and notes:
Kevin Garnett: F
Kevin Garnett started the game hitting a couple of jump shots to give the Nets a 4-0 lead. He finished the game shooting 2-9 for 4 points. He also missed an unbelievably easy tip-in layup that would have kept the Nets in the game with 2 minutes left. His second halves this year have been truly awful.
Paul Pierce: C-
Pierce still shot a low percentage from the field: 5-13, but he was 7-7 from the line to give himself 19 points. They were very quiet points though. His defense was also mediocre again today.
Andray Blatche: C+
Blatche was benched in the fourth quarter and I’m not sure why because he wasn’t playing any worse than everyone else. He finished with 10 points including a very Blatchey fadeaway jump shot as the shot clock was winding down in the second quarter.
Joe Johnson: A
Somehow Joe Johnson scored his Nets career high tonight with 34 points in the game. He was a fantastic 12-18 from the field and 8-10 from 3. Despite all this, the Nets refused to let him touch the ball in the third quarter, which is where the Nets completely fell apart. The Nets need to go to Joe if he is playing well, especially with how badly the rest of the team is playing. He could have had even more if the Nets weren’t playing like idiots.
Shaun Livingston: C-
I think Livingston is playing too many minutes. His body can’t handle 35 minutes per game, which is what he is playing with Deron Williams out. Today he only scored 4 points but he did have 7 assists.
Mirza Teletovic: A-
Mirza played the entire fourth quarter while the Nets’ starters were getting benched for playing well and he did his job, making 3-4 of his 3-point tries. I expect him to get some playing time in Brooklyn’s next game based on this performance.
The Nets will be back in action (or inaction) Tuesday night north of the border in Toronto. The Raptors are currently leading the division, so it will be a good opportunity for them to get back into the race. FRWD will have full coverage of the game.
