It has just been reported that the Nets will receive Jarrett Jack from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three team deal that also includes the Boston Celtics. The full details of the deal are that the Nets will receive Jack and Sergey Karasev from Cleveland, the Celtics will acquire Marcus Thornton and Tyler Zeller plus a future first round pick, and the Cavs will receive a future 2nd round pick from Boston.
The Cavs have been on a furious pursuit of Lebron James and this trade may indicate that he is close to an agreement to come back to his old stomping grounds in Cleveland. The Cavs now have the necessary salary-cap room for a max offer to James, which will be the overshadowing story of this three-team trade.
From a Brooklyn perspective, Jack will come in and fill the void as Deron Williams’ backup after the recent departure of Shaun Livingston. Jack is coming off of a down season but can hopefully get back to playing the way he did in Golden State the prior year. It is a minor gamble that General Manager Billy King is definitely willing to take as Jack can be inserted into the shooting guard position if Jason Kidd decides to play small ball.
It has been no secret that the Nets were trying to rid themselves of backup guard Marcus Thornton and they finally found a suitor who was willing to take him. Thornton is an effective scorer when hot but the Nets simply couldn’t find minutes in their lineup to use him. He should be able to find his way into the Celtics’ rotation if they decide to keep him going into next season.
