The Brooklyn Nets hung on to win an unbelievably crazy game Wednesday night to sweep the home-and-home from the Milwaukee Bucks, 97-94. The Nets rode a big fourth quarter led by their bench to take their first lead since the very beginning of the game, and withstood a comeback attempt from Milwaukee at the very end. The Nets were led by their point guards, Deron Williams and C.J. Watson, who combined for 40 points and 14 assists. For Milwaukee, Brandon Jennings continued to be a Nets-killer, netting 31 points and 11 assists, his second straight 30 point game against Brooklyn.

The game started off poorly for the Nets, but finished nicely, the opposite of what we saw last night. In the first half, they were getting very little ball movement and were letting Milwaukee get way too many fast break points. Brooklyn trailed by 12 at halftime. In the third quarter, they began to come back slowly, but still trailed by 8 heading into the fourth, when things really got crazy. The Nets opened the fourth quarter on a big run led by Marshon Brooks and Kris Humphries (of all people) to take their first lead of the game since it was 4-2. Brooklyn played great defense, or Milwaukee missed lots of shots, and the Nets opened the quarter on a 21-5 run to take a sizable lead. With less than 2 minutes remaining, Deron Williams knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Nets an 11-point lead and most people thought the game was over. That was not the case. The Nets had a couple of turnovers, Milwaukee got some breaks, and before we knew it, it was a 4-point game. The teams traded a couple of buckets, but the Nets kept that 4-point lead until there were 15 seconds remaining. Then, Brandon Jennings made a basket and nearly got a steal. Instead, Deron Williams went to the foul line, where he made 1-2 to give the Nets a 3-point lead with under 5 second remaining. Milwaukee called time and inbounded on their end of the floor. Monta Ellis quickly chucked up a 3 with Deron Williams guarding him. Deron was called for a foul on the shot even though replays showed that the two players might not even have made contact. Luckily, the ball doesn’t lie and Ellis missed all 3 free throws to give the Nets a win and a sweep of the home-and-home.

The Nets have now won 4 games in a row and have beaten the Bucks twice in a row after losing their previous 13 games against this team. This was one of the more memorable home-and-homes ever as both games had crazy finishes.

The trade deadline is now only about 15 hours away. We will know by this time tomorrow if the Nets make any significant moves.

Player grades and notes:

Brook Lopez: D+

Lopez struggled throughout the night and played very little in the second half and not at all in the fourth quarter for the second straight night. He shot only 3-13 in the game with only 1 rebound. It was an off night and he will get past it. Luckily, Andray Blatche picked him up nicely.

Deron Williams: B+

Finished the game with 23 points and 8 assists, but had some weird plays in the fourth quarter. He hit what we thought was the dagger to give the Nets an 11 point lead with under 2 minutes remaining, but then he travelled and missed a huge foul shot at the end. His foul on Monta Ellis at the very end was a terrible call.

Joe Johnson: C

After a great game yesterday, Johnson was pretty bad tonight. He shot 3-14 from the field and only had 8 points. He didn’t hit many shots in the fourth quarter, but was the only Nets starter with a positive +/-.

Andray Blatche: B+

Blatche was huge in the fourth quarter and finished with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. He was good defensively until the very end when he let Larry Sanders get behind him a few times.

C.J. Watson: A

Watson was great tonight. Off the bench, he had 17 points, 6 assists, and three 3′s. He also hit what should have been the dagger if not for the Ellis foul. He played for almost the entire fourth quarter and was a big part of the Nets’ comeback.

After this back-to-back with the Bucks, the Nets will have tomorrow off and then return home for a two-game homestand against the Rockets on Friday and the Grizzlies on Sunday. FRWD will have full coverage of those games.

Joe Johnson hit not 1, but 2 buzzer beaters Tuesday night as the Brooklyn Nets returned from the all-star break with an overtime thrilling win over the Milwaukee Bucks, 113-111. Johnson’s first buzzer beater was a 3 at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime. His second was a 2 at the buzzer to win the game for Brooklyn. Johnson finished the game as the Nets’ leading scorer with 24, but Deron Williams and Brook Lopez each also had 19. Brandon Jennings rode an unbelievable 3rd quarter to 34 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds for Milwaukee.

This game was similar to many Nets games we have seen this season. They jumped out to a big lead, blew it, and found a way to win at the end of the game. Brooklyn’s offense was excellent in the first half, leading them to 61 points and a 10-point lead. However, their third quarter woes continued in this game, and they were worse than usual. The Nets not only blew the lead, but were trailing by 1 heading into the fourth quarter. Brandon Jennings was responsible for most of that. The Bucks led for most of the fourth quarter by as many as 5 points, but the Nets continued to hang around and were down by 1 with the ball and 15 seconds remaining. Deron Williams drove and was called for an offensive foul on a flop by Monta Ellis. The Bucks got the ball back, made 2 foul shots, and then it was Joe Johnson time. JJ came off a screen and hit a pretty open 3 with about a second left on the clock to send the game to overtime. In the overtime, the Nets were quiet offensive, with Keith Bogans scoring Brooklyn’s first 6 points on two 3′s. Milwaukee was not great on offense either and the Nets were lucky enough to have the ball for the last shot. Of course, it went to Joe Johnson who took his defender to the top of the key where he swished his shot through just as the buzzer sounded to the delight of the Brooklyn fans.

This could have been a blowout win for the Nets, but they continued to have poor third quarters. Luckily, they have a man named Joe Johnson who was able to save them tonight. These were his third and fourth buzzer beaters of the season, to go along with many other big shots in fourth quarters and overtimes. The Nets have played very well in close games this season, mainly thanks to Johnson. They are now 5-0 in overtime this season and have won 10 straight overtime games overall.

Of course this game comes less than 2 days before the trade deadline, and it gives Billy King some things to think about. The Nets can definitely use a better power forward, and that was on display in this game. Neither Reggie Evans nor Kris Humphries stepped up, and that almost costed Brooklyn a win. Josh Smith, Paul Millsap, and others may be available. We will know soon if the Nets decide to make a trade.

Player grades and notes:

Brook Lopez: B-

Lopez had a very strange game. He was very effective in the first 3 quarters and was benched in the fourth in favor of Andray Blatche. P.J. tried to bring him back in overtime but he wasn’t the same after sitting for an entire quarter and did not play well. Still, he had 19 points and 9 rebounds, so we can’t really complain.

Deron Williams: B

Deron probably had one of his better games with 19 points and 9 assists, but he also had 6 turnovers. He disappeared in the fourth quarter and overtime and never makes big shots for this team.

Joe Johnson: A++++

2 buzzer beaters in the same game. I think that’s all you need to know about him. Plus 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists doesn’t hurt either.

Andray Blatche: A

Didn’t play much in the first 3 quarters, but played so well in the fourth that P.J. didn’t want to bring Lopez back in to replace him. Made a lot of clutch shots in the fourth quarter, including 2 big foul shots in the closing seconds. He didn’t play in the overtime.

C.J. Watson: B+

Scored 11 points and was effective, but fouled out in only 20 minutes of play.

Keith Bogans: A

Very quiet in regulation, but hit 2 huge 3′s in overtime. Until Joe Johnson’s buzzer beater, Bogans was the only Net to score in overtime. Very strange.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow night in Milwaukee just a day before the NBA trade deadline. FRWD will have full coverage of that game.
